Eliezer Siegfried Hoofien, president of the Bank Leumi the only bank of issue in Israel and successor to the Anglo-Palestine Bank, died this morning at nearby Kfar Shmaryahu. He would have been 76 next month.
Born in Utrecht, Holland, and educated in that country, Mr. Hoofien came to Israel in 1912 after having served as director of the Cologne office of the Zionist Central Office. In Israel he served in a number of economic posts and, at the time of his death, was economic coordinator of the Israel Government. In collaboration with the later Finance Minister Eliezer Kaplan, Mr. Hoofien developed fiscal policies which helped shape the young Israeli economy.
