The situation on the Israeli-Syrian armistice line was discussed yesterday in meetings of the representatives of the United States, Britain and France, with the Secretary General of the United Nations, Dag Hammarskjold.
The border tension, highlighted by the latest Israeli request for a UN investigation into the “threatening attitude” of the Damascus Government, was among several urgent matters brought up in yesterday’s talks, which were devoted to a broad review of problems facing the United Nations.
It is understood that following the discussions of the Western Big Three with Mr. Hammarskjold, there is little likelihood for an early meeting of the Security Council on the Syrian-Israeli conflict. While it is felt here that the situation is still far from being satisfactory, there appears for the time being a tendency to favor further attempts by Col. Byron V. Leary, the Acting Chief of Staff of the UN Truce Supervisory Organization to work out some arrangements without having immediate recourse to the Security Council.
