The Rumanian Legation in Washington is giving evasive replies to Jewish organizations appealing to the Rumanian Government to permit emigration of Jews from the country, it was revealed here today by the Jewish Labor Committee.
The JLC said that a delegation of its leaders, headed by Adolph Held, national chairman, and Nathan Chanin, chairman of the administrative committee, visited the Rumanian Legation and appealed for the re-establishment of free emigration from Rumania by Jews desiring to leave the country.
The delegation met with Josif Dolezal, First Secretary of the Rumanian Legation who was reminded that five years ago, without warning, emigration from Rumanian territory by Jews going to Israel and other nations was abruptly stopped by Rumanian authorities, causing many families to lose links with those family members of the family who had already emigrated.
The delegation informed Mr. Dolezal that, today, five years after the suspension of permissible emigration, many thousands of Rumanian families have their closest relatives in Israel, for example, with no apparent chance of joining them in the near future. Appealing to the Rumanian Government on humanitarian grounds, the JLC delegation pointed out that Poland was permitting Jewish emigration.
