The World Congress for Jewish Culture today marked the fifth anniversary of the “liquidation” in the Soviet Union of all prominent Jewish writers there by issuing an appeal to world Jewry to intensify the fight for restoration of Jewish cultural rights by the Soviet Government.
The appeal emphasized that during the last two years a number of memoranda have been submitted to the Soviet embassy in Washington inquiring of the fate of 450 prominent Jewish writers, painters, actors and musicians who “disappeared” since 1952, but that no reply has been received as yet. A direct appeal cabled to Moscow under the signatures of 40 prominent American intellectuals has similarly been ignored by the Soviet Government, the Congress for Jewish Culture pointed out.
