Israel today gave its support to a resolution calling for the establishment of a permanent, independent international police force under United Nations jurisdiction. The resolution was adopted at a meeting here of the World Federation of United Nations Associations.
Daniel Auster, president of the Israeli Association for the UN and a former Mayor of Jerusalem, who placed Israel behind the call for an international force, said that the “present” UN police force (stationed in the Sinai Peninsula and in the Gaza Strip) has shown its inability to either guard effectively Israel’s border against infiltrators or to pretend to an independent status–as Indonesia has demonstrated by withdrawing its contingent at will.”
Mr. Auster, who was elected vice president of the world federation, suggested that the permanent force should have at least 20,000 well equipped men recruited on an individual basis and therefore having no national responsibilities. In an interview after the meeting, Mr. Auster said that, despite the strong anti-UN feeling in Israel in the aftermath to the Sinai campaign, the Israeli Association had maintained its membership with-out any losses.
