Egypt today came out wholeheartedly in support of Syria and accused Israel of past aggressions compounded by plans for new aggressive expansionism. These sentiments, which were fully expected, were expressed in the General Assembly this morning by Cairo’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Mahmoud Fawzi, who delivered his government’s major policy speech vis-a-vis UN affairs.
The address, however, was considered by most delegations as almost astoundingly moderate- by contrast with the violent Arab flag-waving here yesterday by Ahmad Shukairy, Saudi Arabia’s Minister of State for United Nations Affairs.
Dr. Fawzi complained that Israel is violating last year’s resolution calling for the stationing of the United Nations Emergency Force on its side of the armistice demarcation line. As for Israel’s future plans, he quoted Premier David Ben Gurion to show that Israel is seeking large-scale immigration; which the Egyptian Foreign Minister called a threat to the “neighboring Arab world.” Dr. Fawzi also asserted that Israel continues to “defy” the United Nations by insisting that the armistice agreement is a dead letter.
