Israel has made the United Nations Secretary General “aware” that Israel considers Egypt’s seizure of a fishing vessel with six men aboard an “act of piracy,” a Foreign Ministry spokesman said tonight. He refused to specify what steps Israel may take in the event Egypt does not release the fishermen and their vessel. Observers here see the possibility that Israel will complain directly to the Security Council, if necessary.
The Foreign Ministry spokesman said that both the UN and other international organizations “know the potential dangers if no remedy is provided” Israel. Noting that Israel’s approach thus far has been characterized by patient efforts, he warned against “confusing patience with apathy.”
