Despite further representations by the International Red Cross, no definite answer has yet been received from Egypt on application of the Geneva convention to the Israel fishing trawler Doron and its six-man crew, it was reported here today.
Egypt was reported to be waiting for the Egyptian-Israel Mixed Armistice Commission to conclude an inquiry before deciding whether to permit Red Cross representatives to visit the detained fishermen. The Red Cross reportedly had been given no indication as to when the armistice commission, which is being boycotted by Israel, would act on the situation.
The Red Cross here also was informed by its representative Maurice Thidicum from Cairo that Egypt had also postponed a decision to permit transmission of family messages to the fishermen until the Mixed Armistice Commission makes its report. The Red Cross was understood to be continuing to press Egypt for permission to visit the seamen.
