Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Zionist Organization and of the Jewish Agency, proposed today that Israel seek agreement of the two power blocs on the neutrality of the Middle East, thus depriving the Arabs of an important card and creating an atmosphere in which it should be possible to bring about peace between Israel and the Arabs.
Dr. Goldmann told a special session of the national executive council of the Progressive Party that, while Russia’s attitude toward Israel was hostile, there was still hope of changing the situation. He said that Israel, as the center of world Jewry, must beware of any policy that might antagonize one of the great powers and thus imperil the Jews in that country. He urged an attempt to remove the entire region from the cold war area.
Dr. Pinhas Rosen, the leader of the party and Minister of Justice in the coalition government, told the council that he did not believe that a change in Israel policy would bring about betterment of Soviet-Israel relations. He said Israel was the victim of a Soviet global policy which aimed at establishing the Soviet Union in the Middle East. He urged a policy of caution on Israel.
