The American Jewish Congress’ 1956 Stephen Wise Award for outstanding contributions to the welfare of Jews in all lands was presented tonight to ORT at a dinner at the Stephen Wise Congress House here. Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the American Jewish Congress, presented the award–a bronze plaque and check in the amount of $1,000–to ORT, the principal agency engaged in vocational training among Jews, for its activities in helping to bring “greater economic security and improved employment and living standards to hundreds of thousands of Jews.”

The award was accepted by Dr. William Haber, president of the American ORT Federation and chairman of the central board of the World ORT Union. Other recipients of the 1956 awards included Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, and Dropsie College.
