Progress in most Western European countries in the development of Jewish community organization was reported here by Henry L. Zucker, executive director of the Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland. Mr. Zucker has just completed a six-week mission for the Joint Distribution Committee in Europe.
He told the 54th annual meeting of the Federation that in most of the countries, the leadership is thinking of a voluntary, central community organization leadership and was hopeful of becoming self-maintaining and helpful to Jews elsewhere. He pointed out that the experience of United States federations could be helpful to the European communities but could not be followed exactly. “France,” Mr. Zucker said, “holds the key to the development of Western Europe Jewish population. The crucial task is welding the key volunteer group committed to community work.”
Max Simon, president of the Federation, presided at the meeting at which Rabbi Barnett R. Brickner spoke on the unifying force of federation. The federation’s non-sectarian award, named for Charles Eisenman, its first president, was presented to John A. Greene, chairman of the board of the Ohio Bell Telephone Company.
