The Joint Distribution Committee will grant $1, 575, 000 to the World ORT Union in 1958 for vocational and educational programs which the latter conducts in Europe, North Africa and Israel, it was announced here today.
The announcement, issued jointly by the JDC and ORT, says that an agreement to this effect was signed by the two organizations. The agreement includes JDC financial assistance to ORT vocational training activities among the estimated 10, 000 Jewish repatriates in Poland, the announcement emphasized. Another 10, 000 to 15, 000 Jews are expected to return to Poland from the USSR during the course of 1958.
The new agreement is the twelfth signed between the JDC and ORT since the end of World War H. In the past 11 years, JDC assistance to ORT has totalled about $15, 000, 000 The pact stipulates that ORT will not conduct independent fund-raising campaigns in the United States but will be permitted to continue its membership activities and solicitation
Signing the pact were Dr. William Haber and Max A. Braude for the ORT, and Moses A. Leavitt representing the JDC. The total required by ORT for its programs in 1958 is more than $5, 000, 000. Under the terms of the pact ORT will provide the difference between the JDC grant and the required total from other sources. During 1957 more than 25,000 persons attended classes in the 400 trade schools and workshops maintained by the ORT in 19 countries. “During 1958 ORT expects to give priority consideration to the growing requirements for technical education in Israel, the announcement stated.
