What appears to be the opening gun in an Arab propaganda campaign against Israel in this country was fired in the current issue of MacLean’s Magazine, one of Canada’s most popular publications.

In an article entitled “Why the West Should Stop Supporting Israel,” Prof. Frederick V. Winnett, head of the Department of Near East Studies of University College, Toronto, asserts there will be neither peace nor stability in the Middle East until the West withdraws its backing of Israel. In a piece packed with anti-Zionist and anti-Israeli statements, including the assertion that the people of the Middle East live “in nightly fair of attack” by Israel, the Professor lauds the stand of the anti-Zionist American Council for Judaism.

There have been few attacks on Israel or Zionism from influential circles in Canada in recent years. All four parties in Parliament are pro-Zionist as is much of the Canadian press. However, an “information office” of the Arab League was opened here a few months ago. It is attached to the Lebanese legation and enjoys semi-diplomatic status.
