Joseph M. Mazer of New York, nationally prominent leader in Jewish philanthropic and communal organizations, has been named chairman of the United Jewish Appeal’s special 1958 drive for a $100,000,000 rescue fund, it was announced today by Morris W. Berinstein, UJA general chairman. The rescue fund drive seeks extra gifts above contributions to the Appeal’s regular nationwide campaign exclusively to finance the migration and resettlement of 80,000 Jewish refugees during this year.
In accepting the rescue fund chairmanship, Mr. Mazer said he was “confident that the Jews of America will respond in most generous measure to meet this imperative task of helping thousands of uprooted Jewish men, women and children overseas get an eagerly sought chance to build lives of freedom and dignity.”
Mr. Mazer has for many years been a member of the UJA National Campaign Cabinet, the Appeal’s top planning body, and served as co-chairman of the Appeal’s 1957 emergency rescue fund. He is a former associate chairman of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York and continues to serve on its board of directors. He has visited Israel many times and has conferred frequently with government leaders on the acute problems connected with integration of immigrants.
