A spokesman for the Canadian Club of New York, a social organization of Canadians and former Canadians resident here, affirmed today a reported statement by the club’s president, John Clough, flatly denying that the club barred Jews from membership.
The reported defense of the club’s admission policies was made by Mr. Clough in a telephoned conversation between him and Alan MacNaughton, Montreal member of the Canadian Parliament. Mr. MacNaughton, as an aftermath of charges in the Parliament of such discrimination, said he would resign from the Canadian Club if the charges were true.
Mr. Clough told the Canadian MP that “we have 19 known Jewish members if not more, and that the club’s constitution “prohibits” racial and political considerations in admission policies. The club spokesman also confirmed that Mr. Clough had told Mr. MacNaughton that “New York State would lift the charter if the club practiced racial discrimination.” The spokesman said he was substantiating Mr. Clough’s denials of bias in the absence of the club president on business in the mid-west.
