Italian Foreign Minister Giuseppe Pella told Parliament today that “Italy will not abandon its policy of understanding toward the Arab people.” He was commenting on the Syrian-Egyptian merger into a “United Arab Republic.”

The Minister stressed Italy’s active interest in the Middle East and its friendship toward the Arab world. He told Parliament that Italy’s long-range plan for international economic assistance to Middle East countries has been greeted with great interest in the Middle East. He said that Cabinet members of Middle Eastern countries have contacted Italian officials in Rome and he interpreted this to be an expression of confidence on the part of these governments in Italy’s stand.
