The French Government would not be opposed to a union of Jordan and Iraq which might restore equilibrium in the Middle East and counteract the effects of the Syrian-Jordan merger, a French Foreign Ministry spokesman indicated today.

Sources close to the ministry believe that the French Government is inclined to favor such a move which it sees as assuring, in the long run, the security of Israel and Lebanon. A report current here asserts that Iraq is preparing to quit the Bagdad Pact, a move which would leave that organization far less a threat against Israel.
