The State Department is observing developments on the Israel-Syrian frontier but the opinion here is that nothing will come of the violence now flaring. U.S. Ambassadors in Damascus and Tel Aviv are reporting to Washington on the situation.

A belief exists here that the Arabs are not at this juncture anxious for all-out warfare with Israel because of differences in their own ranks arising from the growing rift separating Arab states.

(From Damascus it was reported today that additional Syrian troops and armor were moving toward the Israel border. The Arab News Agency in Cairo quoted a military spokesman of the United Arab Republic as stating that the UAR (Egypt-Syria) would not remain idle” in the face of what he called Israeli aggression.)
