South African Jewry will present the core of a town in Israel to the Israeli Government within the next six months, It was decided here last night
Ten years after laying out the basic communal buildings, parks and 900 homes, the South African Jewish Appeal, the Union’s Zionist Federation and the South African Jewish Board of Deputies decided to give the town of Askelon to the Israel Government as a gift of South African Jewry.
In the flush of enthusiasm following upon the proclamation of the State of Israel, the South African communal organizations organized a company to plan, finance and build a “garden city” in Israel as a demonstration project for future urban development in the Jewish State. “Afridar,” as the town planning and housing company was called, drove through with its plans even though the final costs were three times the original estimates.
