A call for an extended American program of foreign economic aid as an instrument of “our religious character as a nation” was voiced here last night by Philip M. Klutznick, president of B’nai B’rith. Mr. Klutznick spoke at the annual meeting here of B’nai B’rith’s District Three at which 1,000 delegates have gathered from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New Jersey and Delaware.
Extension of aid to underdeveloped nations, “even if there was no threat of Communist expansion,” Mr. Klutznick asserted, is a “commitment of our nation’s Christian-Hebraic concept of human dignity and brotherhood.” The B’nai B’rith leader scored Congressional attempts to slash the foreign aid program because of charges of waste and inefficiency in its administration as a case of “permitting little errors to destroy big ideas.”
