Gustave L. Levy, New York banker, was reelected president tonight of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of New York, the world’s largest philanthropic network of institutions serving local health and welfare needs, Samuel D. Leldesdorf. a past president of Federation, was reelected chairman of the board. Dr. Maurice B. Hexter and Joseph Willen were reelected executive vice-presidents.
Federation comprises 116 member hospitals and social service agencies and currently provides care for more than 700,000 persons of all races and faiths.
On accepting the presidency, Mr. Levy said that “medical and welfare institutions like the ones linked with the Federation network face enormous problems and new challenges to keep pace with the increasing demands. They must be on the alert and be given the financial resources needed to keep step with scientific advances and to create the new techniques needed to cope with illness and suffering. Only in this way can they continue to be the truly creative forces needed in the world of today and tomorrow.
“The people who support philanthropy and the people who serve as philanthropic leaders face an obligation to see that funds for this gigantic endeavor are placed at the disposal of the community’s institutions, ” he declared.
