Israel Lodges Complaint Against Bulgaria with International Court

The Government of Israel today lodged a complaint with the International Court of Justice here against the Government of Bulgaria for damages resulting from the shooting down of an Israeli plane in the summer of 1955 by Bulgarian fighter craft. Israel’s plea is expected to be heard next month.

The United States and Britain, which had nationals among the 58 passengers and crew men killed, have also lodged complaints against Bulgaria, However, France and South Africa, which lost nationals, have not filed complaints yet.

The crash was followed by an investigation and subsequent Bulgarian admission of responsibility. Sofia made several promises of negotiation for losses suffered by E1A1, Israel national airlines, whose Constellation plane was shot down, but never made good on its pledges.
