Chancellor Julius Raab announced that on his recent visit to the United States he had refused to agree to a proposal from major Jewish organizations there that Austria advance payment of claims of Nazi victims who have been waiting for compensation for many years.
He insisted that Austria had already paid compensation at a speedier rate than required under its laws, 50,000,000 schillings a year. On the whole, the Chancellor said, the Jewish leaders seemed satisfied with the Austrian regulations.
The Chancellor told a press conference that the condition of the Vienna synagogue and the main Jewish cemetery in this city are scandalous. He pledged that the next national budget would carry an item for 10, 000,000 schillings to reconstruct them.
