The United Jewish Appeal was highly praised in the Senate today by a number of leading Senators of the Republican and Democratic parties who called for maximum support of the UJA and lauded American Jewry for its financial contributions to Israel and to needy Jewish communities overseas.
Sen. Herbert H. Humphrey, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s Near Eastern Subcommittee, a Minnesota Democrat, said the Senate should encourage support of the United Jewish Appeal and other such undertakings. He termed Israel America’s “only really dependable ally in the Middle East.”
Sen. Alexander Wiley, Wisconsin Republican and ranking Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, said of UJA supporters: “I take my hat off to the selfless devotion of the people who are giving to sustain this friendly land (Israel).” He said the UJA should be praised. He pointed out that support of Israel contributed to America’s self-preservation
Sen. Paul Douglas, Illinois Democrat, called for resettlement of Arabs in Arab countries and noted that Arabs readmitted to Israel in large numbers might constitute a fifth column. He suggested a guarantee of existing borders. Sen. Joseph S. Clark, Pennsylvania Democrat, associated himself with the views of colleagues in support of Israel and the UJA.
Sen. Jacob K. Javits told the Senate that recent anti-Israel statements by Sen. Ralph Flanders, Republican of Vermont, “are so susceptible to exploitation by bigots here and elsewhere that they cannot be allowed to go unanswered.” He strongly lauded the UJA and refuted allegations by Sen. Flanders against Israel.
