Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko was asked today by Adolph Held, national chairman, and Nathan Chanin, chairman of the administrative committee of the Jewish Labor Committee, whether continued repression of Jewish cultural institutions and personalities in the Soviet Union is “further appeasement of the Nasser clique in the Arab world.”
The JLC wired the Soviet Foreign Minister that it “welcomes your visit to the United Nations as a splendid opportunity to receive your country’s reply to our consistent ten-year demand to learn the fate of Jewish cultural institutions and leaders in the Soviet Union.”
“Destruction of Jewish cultural life in the Soviet Union has been a cause of great concern to working men and women, Jews and non-Jews throughout the world, ” the message said. “When will Jewish cultural institutions be unpadlocked, Jewish books be published, Yiddish newspapers be permitted, Jewish theatre played in your country again? We will welcome an immediate reply.”
