Senator Ralph E. Flanders, Vermont Republican, who has made it his habit recently to attack Israel in the Senate, was today denounced by the Daily Messenger, the newspaper serving this Vermont community, for his anti-Israel outbursts. The editorial, which was signed by the publisher of the newspaper, said:

“It would be interesting to know for what Senator Flanders is the spokesman. Then we would know who is setting up Senator Flanders to make his recent dangerous statements to the effect that the State of Israel is the cause of the trouble in the Near East. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

The newspaper defended Israel and expressed regret that “President Eisenhower made one of the greatest mistakes in the history of this country” by intervening against Israeli-British-French forces at the time of the Sinai-Suez war.

“The one last block to absolute Communist control in the Near East is the State of Israel, ” the paper pointed out. “Therefore, it would be interesting to know what forces in this country put Senator Flanders up to this ill-advised and most unfortunate “attack on Israel. “If we knew what forces they were we could take steps now to counteract them, ” the newspaper said, “and this must be done at an early date.”
