The influential Christian Science Monitor warned the Western Powers in an editorial today that they had to deal with President Nasser of the United Arab Republic “at more than arm’s length and regard him as an inveterate enemy. “

The newspaper said that “Americans and Britons have tried hard to be just as between Arab aspirations and Zionism. Washington officials have been at a point where they would welcome an opportunity to extend economic help to Egyptian and Arab peoples on a scale comparable to what Israel has received.

“But Nasserism sounds a constant warning and a threat against doing too much in this respect. To build up Nasserism rather than a more constructive Arabism might be a disservice to the world. The ambitious dictator of the United Arab Republic leaves the West little alternative but to deal with him at more than arm’s length and regard him as an inveterate enemy. “
