Dr. Luis Mackay, the Argentine Minister of Education, told newspapermen today that his ministry was launching an immediate investigation into the action of the principal of a public school for girls in segregating Jewish pupils from Catholics in the classrooms of the school which is in a predominantly Jewish district. A Jewish deputy, member of the Government party, announced today that he would raise the case in Parliament.
The incident, revealed earlier this week by a news broadcaster, has created strong feelings not only in the Jewish community but among the Catholic majority as well. The DAIA, the Jewish representative organization, has not yet intervened in the case, having been asked by the parents of pupils at the school to let them fight out the issue.
The chairman of the parents’ committee said today that he had documentary proof that the principal, Mrs. Maria Teresa Quiroga de Nocetti, had ordered the segregation. He expressed belief that she would be removed from her position as principal of Public Commercial High School No. 16. He said she was well known for her anti-Semitic antecedents. Both Catholic and Jewish parents have advised their children to remain away from the school until the principal resigns.
