A chilly Southern reception was indicated today for two New York Republican Senators headed South for a rapid two-day inspection of religious and racial bigotry in Georgia, Alabama and Florida.
Senator-elect Kenneth B. Keating, making the trip in fulfillment of a campaign pledge, and Senator Jacob K. Javits left together by air to visit cities where synagogues have been bombed.
Georgia Senators Richard B. Russell and Herman Talmadge indicated the New Yorkers would be courteously received but both suggested that the visitors first probe violence in New York City public schools. Another Southern Senator, who asked not to be identified, expressed doubt that anything could be accomplished on a two-day itinerary that included three states. Sens. Keating and Javits were scheduled to meet with local and Federal officials, also religious and minority organization leaders, in Atlanta, Jacksonville, and Birmingham within two days allocated for the entire venture.
Sen. Javits said that they hope to use the information obtained in drafting legislation against bombing religious and public buildings and dissemination of hate literature.
