Establishment of a $100,000 Judah L. Magnes Chair in Middle East Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was announced here this week-end at a memorial meeting observing the tenth anniversary of the death of Dr. Magnes, first chancellor and later president of the Hebrew University.

This is the second $100,000 chair at the University announced in a week. The first chair was an Eleanor Roosevelt Chair in Humanities to be endowed by the Women’s Division of the American Friends of the University.

At the memorial, sponsored by the American Friends, Dr. Nelson Glueck, president of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, paid tribute to Dr. Magnes. Other speakers were Dr. Alexander M. Dushkin, former dean of the School of Education at the Hebrew University, and Dr. Israel S. Wechsler, honorary president of the American Friends. Dr. Glueck, who had been associated with Dr. Magnes while exploring Biblical sites in Israel, described Dr. Magnes as “a spiritual giant.”
