B’nai B’rith today adopted a record budget of $6,099,890 for its 1959 service activities on the national level. Its board of governors approved an increase of more than $500,000 over the current year’s budget.
Major part of the increase was appropriated for expansion of B’nai B’rith youth activities. B’nai B’rith sponsors Hillel Foundations, religious and cultural centers for Jewish students on 216 college campuses; the B’nai B’rith Youth Organization, largest teen-age Jewish youth group in the world; and B’nai B’rith Vocational Service which conducts career counseling in 19 major cities.
At the same time, the organization approved formation of a B’nai B’rith Foundation to serve as a single fund-raising unit for its multiple and widespread educational, patriotic and community service activities. The foundation will be incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia where B’nai B’rith maintains its national headquarters.
Proposals for a three-year $300,000 expansion of B’nai B’rith’s program of adult Jewish education and an additional $100,000 a year appropriation for its operation and research in international affairs, both to be financed by a special assessment of the 400,000 membership, were held over for action by the B’nai B’rith triennial convention next May in Jerusalem.
