A survey of Jewish education in 33 typical American cities across the country has been completed by the American Association for Jewish Education, it was announced at a press conference here today by Philip W. Lown, president of the AAJE. Dr. Uriah Z. Engelman directed the study.
Prof. Alexander M. Dushkin, dean of the School of Education of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, has been, invited to spend the next academic year interpreting the data gathered by the AAJE and writing the final report. Dr. Dushkin, a prominent authority on Jewish Education who 40 years ago published the first study of American Jewish education, said at the press conference that it was “most gratifying” that more than 80 percent of the Jewish children in this country receive some religious education.
Mr. Lown revealed that Dr. Dushkin’s report on the National Study of Jewish Education would be submitted to the forthcoming fourth national conference on Jewish Education which would be convened in the first week of June 1959. The conference will also mark the 20th anniversary of the AAJE.
Dr. Judah Pilch, executive director of the Association, stated at the conference that the observance of the 20th anniversary should focus the attention of the American Jewish community on the need for greater cooperation among all agencies engaged in educational endeavors in order to mobilize all forces in the community for a better understanding and a deeper conviction of the importance of Jewish education for the future of Jewish life in America.
