The fifth national convention of the Herut Party of Israel concluded here today with the adoption of resolutions opposing a policy of appeasement by the Government of Israel, demanding the conclusion of bilateral agreements with the Western Powers rather than seeking guarantees, and a reduction and even elimination–if possible–of military administration in the Arab border areas of Israel.
The delegates also voiced their opposition to the Soviet plan to “exile Russian Jewry to Birobidjan.” The resolution asked free emigration for Russian Jews.
Menahem Beigin was re-elected by acclamation leader of the right-wing party. In his acceptance speech, Mr. Belgin warned the 500 delegates against over-optimism in the forthcoming national election campaign. He said that though the party will go into the campaign without partners, it will not attack the General Zionists, also in the Opposition. It will concentrate all its fire on the parties of the left, he pledged.
