A Moscow broadcast in the Russian language, monitored here today, alleged that “both in London and in Washington special concern is shown for the strengthening of Israel as a military forward post.”
The broadcast said that “deliveries of arms to Israel are proceeding apace” and that Britain is sending Israel heavy tanks, armored vehicles, guns, radar and installations, helicopters, jet planes and submarines.” The broadcaster, Georgy Verbitsky, predicted that Britain will supply arms to Israel to the total value of about 150 million dollars.
“The United States does not lag behind Britain,” he continued. “She is also sending new consignments of arms. Talks on equipping the Israeli army with U.S. rocket installations are in progress. Intensive military construction work is in progress on Israeli territory in areas bordering the Arab countries.
“Such a policy of the Western Powers only heats up and inflames the expansionist and aggressive aims of the ruling circles of Israel, who do not disguise their enmity toward the neighboring Arab countries,” the Soviet broadcast told the Russians. “This is not the first time that Israel has brandished its weapons. We all know the role that Israel played during the period of aggression against Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan.”
The Soviet broadcast urged the Russians to read the anti-Israel book by Ivanov and Sheinis, published weekly by the State Publishing House for Political Literature, entitled “The State of Israel, its Position and Policy.” It emphasized that “the book provides many facts demonstrating that on questions of foreign policy the State of Israel has placed itself in a position of a country which was compelled wholly to follow in the wake of the policy of the imperialist and colonial powers. Of special interest are the pages of the book which reveal the roots of the foreign policy of the State of Israel. They find themselves mainly in its economic dependence on the largest British and U.S. monopolies,” the Moscow broadcast asserted.
