The Schlessig-Holstein Ministry of Culture has announced that two schools in this province named for an anti-Semitic German writer, Adolf Bartels, will have new names shortly.
The decision to rename the schools followed public protests last November when Bartel’s 96th anniversary was marked in his native town, Wesselburen. As early as 1907 Bartels viciously attacked Jews in a volume “Jewry in German Literature” and, somewhat later, in “Heine Genossen. “His hate mongering was honored by the Nazi regime.
