Finance Minister Levi Eshkol, who came to the United States a fortnight ago to confer with American and Canadian leaders on plans for mobilizing greater economic aid, left Idlewild today aboard an El Al-Israel Airlines plane to return to Israel.
During his brief stay Israel’s Finance Minister conferred with leaders of the United Jewish Appeal and the Israel Bond Organization and discussed with American Jewish leaders the problem of financing transportation, reception and initial care for the greatly increased flow of immigrants which is expected to bring some 100, 000 newcomers from East European countries.
Commenting on the results of his visit, Mr. Eshkol said: “I was gratified to find that the economic partnership we have developed with American Jews through the enrollment of more than 1, 000, 000 persons as Israel bondholders is making steady progress. ” He also expressed confidence that leaders of American Jewry would do an outstanding job in the United Jewish Appeal campaign to raise the funds needed for transportation and the first stages of reception and care for the new wave of immigrants.
“I am confident that in investments through the purchase of Israel bonds as well as through philanthropic contributions to the United Jewish Appeal, American Jewry will do its utmost to enable Israel to keep its doors open and to absorb many tens of thousands of immigrants on a level of dignity and productive integration, ” the Israel leader declared.
