Malben, the Joint Distribution Committee network of institutions for the aged and ill in Israel, is making arrangements to accept its share of the old and sick people who may be included in the immigration wave from Eastern Europe. Louis Horowitz, Malben director, reported here today.
He revealed that Malben’s budget for the new year is 18,000,000 Israeli pounds, of which 6,200,000 is set aside for care of the aged, 2,000,000 for general medical services and 1,300,000 for loans to help individuals set themselves up in new economic circumstances. The remainder is used for special projects in which Malben and the Israel Government cooperate.
A new system of placing older people in communal living situations has proven a success, Mr. Horowitz reported. As a result many healthy seniors have been placed in constructive work and hospital and home space has been freed for “hard core” cases.
