The central fund-raising organization for Jewish welfare and cultural needs in France-Fonds Social Juif Unifie–today set a record goal of 300,000,000 francs for its 1959 drive. The sum is almost double the amount raised last year, when subscriptions totalled 170,000,000 francs.
Guy de Rothschild, president of the fund, announced at the annual meeting that the FSJU and Keren. Hayesod, fund-raising arm of the Zionist organization, will conduct a joint campaign during part of the year “to meet the critical needs arising from the emigration of Jews from Eastern Europe.”
Gen. Julien Samuel, director of FSJU, announced that plans have been made this year to solicit contributions from many thousands of potential givers who have not contributed heretofore, Included among these will be many Jews in this country who were formerly recipients of aid from Jewish welfare organizations, and are now well enough established to help the FSJU’s work.
A plea for return “to traditional Jewish sources as a means of strengthening Jewish life and assuring its continuance” was voiced at the meeting by Emanuel Levinas, director of schools for Alliance Israelite Universelle.
