Students at the Hebrew University staged a strike and street demonstration today in protest against an increase in tuition fees recommended by a special inquiry committee.
The increase was from 260 to 400 pounds a year, as recommended by the committee which had been headed by Supreme Court Justice Simon Agranat. The increase had been approved by the Ministry of Education, which noted that the higher fee was still less than that paid in many senior classes of high schools. Both press and public were critical of the student action.
A delegation of the striking students was received today by Premier David Ben Gurion who, after hearing their grievances, promised to consider their demands. The Premier spent about 90 minutes with the delegation. During that time, about 1,000 students demonstrated outside of the Premier’s office unhampered by a sudden drizzle. Mr. Ben Gurion told the delegation he will study the Agranat recommendations and will also discuss them with the Hebrew University authorities.
