Fifty-seven Brazilians have qualified as contestants in a Bible contest that has the entire country absorbed, after being launched by Arye Avissar, director of the Hebrew Cultural Institute here. Manufacturers of radio and television sets, and Al Italia, the Italian airlines, have offered prizes to the winners, the first prize to be a trip to Israel.

The 57 contestants are being given special examinations by a board which includes some of the country’s foremost Catholic and Protestant priests, ministers and educators, as well as two rabbis. The run-off will be broadcast on a series of eight Sunday television programs.
