May Day passed quietly and serenely in Israel this year, many of the parades, especially in the bigger towns, being keyed to new industrial enterprises being launched or dedicated.
At Tiberias, ground was broken for a new cement-products plant. At Ashkelon, the cornerstone was laid for a plywood factory. A new sewing machine factory went into operation on May Day at Safad, while at Elath. Israel’s southernmost port, on the Gulf of Akaba. dedication ceremonies were held for a new factory making prefabricated housing for use in the expanding Negev economy.
