A recommendation that Israel be given a grant of $320,000 over a five-year period for the construction of a pilot project in watershed management was made here today to the Governing Council of the United Nations Special Fund. The proposed grant is one of 75, aggregating $81,081,000, thus far requested of the fund which totals $100,000,000.
Under the plans disclosed today regarding Israel, the Government of Israel would spend $350,000 to match the Special Fund’s contribution of $320,000. The monies would be used over a five-year period to experiment with agricultural and engineering techniques for the retention of water from rainfall in the semi-arid region of Israel’s Mediterranean basin. Most of that water now runs off wastefully into the sea. The ultimate objective is to establish means for using the water gainfully.
The Special Fund’s Governing Council will also have before it other Middle East fund requests, including two for the United Arab Republic, totalling $565,000.
