In a gala atmosphere which combined celebration of Israel’s eleventh Independence Day with one of the most impressive exhibits of Israeli arts and crafts ever shown here, a traveling exhibit, entitled “Forms from Israel,” was given a preview before prominent guests and representatives of the press tonight, at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts here.
The exhibit, which has already been show in Baltimore, Indianapolis and Albany, will be at the Museum until August 30. It will be opened formally to the public Friday afternoon, with a visit from Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt.
At the preview tonight, the principal participants were Simcha Pratt, Israel Consul-General in New York; Samuel Rubin, president of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation; Mrs. Paul Herzog, chairman of Crafts from Israel; and the treasurer of the latter organization, Adolph Held.
The exhibition, being previewed on Israel’s eleventh anniversary, illustrates “the sovereignty and supremacy of man’s creative genius over the forces of destruction and over those which withhold the true freedom of man’s personality,” Mr. Pratt stated.
“This exhibition,” the Consul-General continued, “restates the ancient truth –that man lives best, fulfills himself best, in freedom.”
The exhibit is being co-sponsored by the Government of Israel, in cooperation with the America-Israel Cultural Foundation and Crafts from Israel. It was produced by the Israel Institute of Industrial Design, in consultation with the American Federation of Arts. The Federation is circulating the exhibit which, for 18 months after its showing at the Museum here, will be on view in Richmond, Va., Columbus, Ohio, Milwaukee, Seattle, San Francisco and Boston.
