Prime Minister David Ben Gurion said today that the death of John Foster Dulles was “a grievous loss to the United States and to man-kind as a whole “but that”his life’s work will endure as an eternal monument to a great statesman. “
In a cable to President Eisenhower voicing the sympathies and condolences of the Government and people of Israel, Mr. Ben Gurion referred to the late Secretary of State as the “unfailing support to you and to every freedom-and peace-loving people.”
The Israeli Prime Minister described Mr. Dulles as “a statesman who, in large measure, guided the international politics of all the free nations. ” He recalled the visit by Mr. Dulles to Israel six years ago which, he said, “left a deep impression in the hearts of many of us. ” The people of Israel, said Mr. Ben Gurion, regarded him as a wise and loyal friend, even at times when there were differences in their views.
“We knew that he appreciated our young state as the bastion of human freedom, spiritual and material progress, ” he declared. “He was devoted to the spiritual heritage of our prophets and was the true friend to all people endeavoring to preserve internal and external freedom.”
