“American Jewry Day” was celebrated today in 16 cities and settlements in various parts of Israel, including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. The events had been arranged by the Israeli executive of the World Jewish Congress, with the aid of local authorities, and were designed to increase Israeli understanding of life among Jews in the United States.
At rallies here and in Tel Aviv, members of Parliament and local officials urged Israelis to eliminate their “superiority complex” vis-a-vis Jewry outside Israel. Many speakers pointed out that the Israelis have little or no knowledge about life and communal activities of Jews in America, and declared it will be difficult to find common cultural ground with American Jewry until Jews in Israel increase their knowledge about the American Jewish community.
At Kibbutz Ein Hashofet, named after the late Justice Brandeis, a special meeting was held Friday night for hundreds of Americans and Canadians now living in various settlements. Speakers at this rally included Dr. L. Bernstein, of the World Jewish Congress, and Murray Greenfield, director of the Association of Americans and Canadians in Israel, The meeting discussed the possibilities of encouraging increased emigration to Israel from the United States and Canada, as well as the settlement of Canadians and Americans in Israel.
