A resolution urging the United States Government “to take the opportunity offered by the World Refugee Year to change our basic immigration laws, ” was adopted here today at the conclusion of the three-day meeting of the executive committee of the National Council of Jewish Women.
The resolution emphasized that the immigration laws “must not only be revised to meet recurring refugee problems, but also to eliminate the national origins quota system which now prevents thousands of potentially valuable immigrants from coming to the United States. “
The executive committee congratulated President Eisenhower on American cooperation in World Refugee Year, which begins July 1, but added that “American willingness to admit a fair share of the world’s refugees, as well as American support of resettlement elsewhere, is essential to the resolution of current refugee problems. “
Scholarships for advanced study in the United States in 1959-60 are being granted by the Council to 15 welfare specialists and educators from Israel and Morocco, it was announced at the sessions. In addition, the executive committee decided that the organization’s programs throughout the U. S. next fall will highlight youth needs. The NCJW has 110, 000 members in 240 Sections throughout the United States.
