A feeling of very cautious optimism was noted here today with regard to the possibility of solving the Israel-Egyptian crisis provoked by Egypt’s halting of the Danish freighter Inge Toft at the Suez Canal and the attempt to seize the Israeli cargo on that vessel.
There was no further information as to the fate of the Israeli cargo aboard the Danish freighter. The basic positions of the parties involved remain unchanged for the time being. However, the feeling in Washington circles seems to be that the issue is not closed yet. The U. S. continues to show deep interest in the developments. The possibility that some prospect of solution may develop should not be excluded, although at present there is no firm basis for such an assumption, informed circles said today.
The Israel Charge d’Affaires, Yaacov Herzog, today again conferred with Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, William Rountree. It is understood that the Inge Toft problem was the main topic of their discussion.
