A delegation of goldsmiths from the bazaars of Tunis, whose overwhelming majority are Jews, was received by President Bourguiba. They handed to him 15 kgms, of gold as their corporation’s contribution to the campaign launched by the Government in support of the national currency.

The delegation assured the President of the guild’s wholehearted devotion to his person and the cause he stands for. In his answer the President said: “It pleases me to pay my respects to all, Moslems and Jews. I congratulate you on this act of faith and hope that with our unity Tunisia will always be prosperous.”

The Tunisian press has been devoting articles during the last weeks to the relations between “Moslem Tunisians” and “Jewish Moslems.” All newspapers are unanimous in their declarations that “all Tunisians, be their religion what it may, are equal before the law. ” The “Petit Matin” writes: “Moslems and Jews do not forget that their destinies are identical with that of the country which they inhabit, the fatherland which is common to them, and which leads them to peace, productive work and fraternal understanding. “
