Three opinion polls of West German adults since 1952 indicate that anti-Jewish attitudes are declining in West Germany, according to the Institute Fuer Demoskipie in Allensbach.
The Institute first polled a cross-section of 2, 000 West Germans in 1952, asking: “Would you say that it would be better for Germany if no Jews remained here? ” On the first poll, 37 percent replied affirmatively. In 1956, 29 percent replied affirmatively and in the current poll, 22 percent replied”yes, ” 38 percent said “no” and 40 percent were “undecided.”
Another survey indicated that 44 percent of the respondents had no recognition of the word “Anti-Semitism. ” Fifty-three percent of the women and 50 percent of all respondents under 30 years of age did not know what the word meant, the Institute said.
