Assurance that anti-Semitism in Germany does not constitute any “real danger” to Jews there was given by Eric Olleanhauer, chairman of the Social Democratic Party in West Germany, to the Jewish Labor Committee, in a communication made public here today.
The communication came as reply to a letter from Adolph Held, JLC national chairman, who inquired from the German Social Democratic Party on the recent incidents in Germany aimed at Jews.
“We are the least to minimize anti-Semitic attacks,” Mr. Ollenhauer wrote, “but these things should be seen in their proper proportion. Every single anti-Semitic out-burst is, of course, an offence to human dignity and is being treated from our side as such.
“We share your anxiety on recent developments of anti-Semitic outbursts and anybody, who has followed events close at hand, that means on the spot in Germany, will know that our party has been leading the attack against a renaissance of anti-Semitism,” the leader of the Social Democratic Party continued. He added that his party and the trade union movement are “bearing the brunt of the struggle against old and new Nazi elements.”
